Keeping Your Chimney Safe and Sound

Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choose the right firewood for cleaner burning and less creosote buildup.

Types of Firewood

Hardwoods, like oak and maple, are ideal for cleaner burning. They are dense, providing longer burn times and higher heat output. Hardwoods also produce less smoke and creosote compared to softwoods.

Softwoods, such as pine, burn faster and produce more smoke due to their higher sap content. This can lead to increased creosote accumulation, which is the leading cause of chimney fires.

Seasoning Your Firewood

Properly seasoned wood burns more efficiently and cleanly. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months, reducing its moisture content.

Wet or unseasoned wood creates more smoke and creosote. To season firewood, stack it in a dry, covered area that allows airflow, and store it off the ground to prevent moisture absorption.

Signs of Good Firewood

Look for firewood that is gray and cracked on the ends, indicating it is dry and ready for burning. Seasoned wood is lighter than freshly cut logs.

When you knock two pieces together, the sound should be hard and hollow, not dull and thudding. Incorporating moisture meters can also help ensure your firewood is adequately dry before use.
